Head of Underwriting Strategy and Excellence - Open to internal applicants only Oversight of the effective management of underwriting risk, and supporting reduction in underwriting leakage, by driving up underwriting quality, and technical capability and standards which are key to help drive outperformance. The role will require that business teams are adhering to the requirements within the Underwriting Policy and associated frameworks, and that the right capability, processes, and controls are in place to effectively manage our portfolios within RSA’s risk appetite. As part of the underwriting function, the Line1 defence team are required to support the growth strategy of the Underwriting function whilst maintaining controls at a reasonable level appropriate to our size. You will work closely with UKI Colleagues, the CUO, Portfolio & Pricing Leaders, and other key Senior Leaders to manage the effective and efficient delivery of Policy and framework requirements. You will provide leadership to a small technically experienced team, ensuring the necessary levels of performance. You will need a knowledge of Commercial and Personal Underwriting, business knowledge and experience Key Responsibilities: Developing with UKI Colleagues a Validation and Control Framework to deliver quality Underwriting across the Underwriting function Managing the control validation Framework to independently review and validate the controls within the Underwriting Functions across Personal and Commercial Lines in RSAII and RSANI Preparing high quality reports detailing the findings from validation reviews and assessments of Portfolio Risk Appetite and Strategy reviews for Group and local Board Committees Influencing Portfolio Managers and other key stakeholders of the benefits of maintaining and improving Risk Management standards and Underwriting and Portfolio controls Providing expert advice to Senior leaders on effective solutions for emerging underwriting issues Designing an Annual Underwriting Validation plan and ensuring it is delivered effectively and efficiently in line with timelines reported to Senior Management Acting as Secretary to various RSA fora such as Product Oversight and Governance, Accumulation and Exposure Management and Wordings Committee Ongoing management of the POG and Wording sign off processes. Management and oversight of the Executive and case underwriting licence process Operational Efficiencies: Supporting the identification, development, and delivery of process improvements to drive operational benefits To support Personal and Commercial Portfolio and Pricing in the development of the Business and supporting strategies Building and maintaining effective relationships with internal stakeholders to ensure services meet the needs of the business Leading and motivating your team to fully exploit their capabilities and RSA’s investment in training and development to ensure delivery of the required standards of excellence and performance. Dealing with external auditors on Underwriting and Pricing matters Requirements: 5 years experiences within Insurance Good Underwriting Technical Capability across Personal and Commercial Lines to enable effective challenge of Underwriting controls and control validation. Good written and verbal communication skills Strong organizational skills Regulatory Requirements: If this role is defined as a "controlled function" by the Central Bank Reform Act 2010 Regulations 2011.
