Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.7bn, 14,664km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and green hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future. Gas Networks Ireland is now seeking to appoint a Senior Design Engineer (Mechanical) Tx working on transmission (19 – 85 barg) new connection projects who will be responsible for leading the design and material specifications to deliver large Transmission connections. The Role: The Asset Delivery function within Gas Networks Ireland is responsible for the end-to-end planning, designing and delivery of GNI’s portfolio of asset development programmes. Encompassing the three pillars of Project Delivery Management, Design Delivery and Project Services; the Asset Delivery function brings together all the technical and project support capabilities needed to take high-level projects and programmes from the Portfolio Office and translate these through from detailed design and planning, to construction delivery and handover to Asset Operations. Reporting to the Design Delivery Lead Price Control (Tx/Dx), the Senior Design Engineer Transmission New Connections will have responsibility for the detailed design of CAPEX projects for all new network connections. The Senior Design Engineer will manage the design of the new connections and outsourced engineering providers ensuring a high quality design service is delivered within Design Delivery. The successful candidate will have the ability to lead a team, to effectively diagnose technical issues and have knowledge of gas related process design. The Senior Design Engineer Mechanical New Connections will work closely with the Senior C&I Design Engineer for New Connections to ensure the end to end design process is aligned to meet the overall new connection programme timelines within Design Delivery. Duties and Responsibilities: Lead a team comprised of internal design engineers, seconded engineers and engineering service providers to deliver the design of transmission new connections to the gas network to meet connection programme timelines. Managing the design in accordance with the Engineering Design Manual, including design review, design deviation process, material inspections, tender document preparation for new connections, comprising pipelines, network modifications and pressure reducing installations across the network. Provide technical design support to design engineers developing and maintaining internal engineering design competence. Review, validation, appraise, challenge and ultimately accept designs where designs are outsourced ensuing compliance with industry standards. Lead innovation within design incorporating best practice engineering. Attendance of factory acceptance testing for all aspects of materials as required. Lead as required to enable the completion of HAZID or HAZOP including recording risks on the internal risk management system. Ensure all design documentation is fully and accurately completed, loaded onto Sharepoint system, appropriate procedures and controls are in place ensuring compliance with the design process. Support sustainability where reasonable within the design process e.g., materials. Comply with appropriate controls for environmental, planning or other statutory conditions, mitigations as part of any consenting process e.g., technical conditions to ensure followed through. Lead and facilitate enablement of cyber security within the design process. Lead and support the enablement of material frameworks for design of new connections, e.g. pipelines, pressure reduction units, package boiler units, including scoring of supplier competitions and responding to material clarifications. Contributing to the continuous improvement of internal design processes and procedures including ISO: 9000 in the Design environment and attending audits. Co-ordination of specialist technical services and third party resources as part of the design process to enable delivery of designs. Lead and ensure alignment across design with other Senior Design Engineers within the design team e.g. knowledge sharing and lessons learned from projects. Performing other duties as assigned from time to time. Knowledge, Skills and Experience: Degree in Engineering (Level 8) with a minimum of five years engineering experience, preferably in the natural gas industry. Enthusiastic self starter with a proactive approach to problem solving and process development. Technical proficiency in process design and pressure equipment specification. Excellent interpersonal and strong leadership skills and the ability to influence, advocate and persuade. Have a working knowledge of H&S standards and risk management systems e.g. Design Risk Assessment, HAZOP, etc… Have a working knowledge of relevant Gas Standards, Codes of Practice and Statutory Requirements. Facilitate the implementation and acceptance of change within the workplace. Provide coaching in the development of technical skills and abilities in others. Proactively identifying new areas of learning and using newly gained knowledge and skill on the job. Driver of high standards for individual, team and organisational accomplishment and delivering desired results. Proven track record with dealing with complex issues, problem solving, in a timely fashion, along with the ability to communicate complex information to others. Ability to set own high standards of performance and delivering desired results.
