Ocean Career: The Marine Institute Aquaculture and Catchment Monitoring Scientific Officer ECO Posted On November 16, 2023 The Marine Institute is the national agency responsible for marine research, technology, development and innovation (RTDI). The Marine Institute seeks to assess and realize the economic potential of Ireland’s 220-million-acre marine resource; promote the sustainable development of marine industry through strategic funding programs and scientific services; and safeguard the marine environment through research and environmental monitoring. The Institute works in conjunction with the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine (DAFM) and a network of other Government Departments, semi-state agencies, national and international marine partners. Summary of the Role: The successful candidate will work across the FEAS aquaculture and catchment monitoring teams as a Scientific and Technical Officer (STO), with primary responsibility for fish rearing & migratory fish monitoring programs at the Marine Institute Newport Long Term Ecological Research Centre (MI LTERC). You will work closely with the Senior Laboratory Analyst and the Laboratory Analyst team to support running of the migratory fish census and ensure the effective fish rearing facilities. This role will include support for the migratory fish census operations and responsibility for the care and welfare of the fish stocks on site, ensuring that routine husbandry procedures are followed and that the facilities are compliant with relevant Regulations on animal health, scientific animal welfare and the terms of the aquaculture license. The candidate will also be expected to contribute to research projects which utilize the facilities and the wider catchment area. Educational and Professional Requirements: A Degree in a relevant scientific area. Relevant post qualification work experience in migratory fish stock assessment, ranching and tagging. Work experience in a scientific or technical environment including field work, data collection and biological sampling. Sea going experience and sufficiently fit to pass an ENG II Medical and participate in appropriate mandatory safety related training. Experience of working safely in a laboratory/field environment. Direct experience in following and the effective use of standard operating procedures (SOPs). A high level of computer literacy including the use of standard office software packages. Proven track record in effectively preparing scientific reports. A full clean Driving License. Duration of Contract: The contract will be issued on a contract of indefinite duration basis subject to the successful candidate completing a six-month probation period whereby demonstrating consistent competence in and suitability for the role.
